Mr Bechet Saxophonist Budd Johnson was a talented and valuable jazz musician for many decades, a behind-the-scenes player and writer who uplifted a countless number of sessions from the 1930s into the '80s. Budd Johnson didn't record much, which makes this 1974 set with the great Earl Hines all the more interesting. Of course, the real reason it's special is because of some damn-fine music by some outstanding jazzmen. Johnson and Hines are joined by drummer Panama Francis and bassist Jimmy Leary. The title tracks is an original tribute to the king of soprano saxophonists Sidney Bechet. Personnel: Budd Johnson: tenor and sopreano saxophone Earl Hines: piano Jimmy Leary: bass Panama Francis: drums Recorded at the Seed Studio in Vallauris, France on July 18, 1974 Engineer: Gerhard Lehner
