Their first session for instance was originally segmented in a variety of compilation albums one tune each and many times the selections were even abridged suppressing a solo here or there Along with another equally splendid session it was included in Baker and Peppers most famous album together Playboys which was also released under the title Picture of Heath At the time both Baker and Pepper were at their peaks which is to say that each was playing as much or more on his instrument than anyone in Jazz This edition restores the complete sessions that produced this outstanding album Jazz Track

Chet Baker & Art Peppers Playboys is perhaps not my favourite record cover but it was the first one to catch my attention and haunt me as a young child I used to play with my dads record collection which consisted mostly of jazz and early blues I would pick out certain records and rearrange them into narratives based on their cover images I always picked out Playboys because its contrast of cleavage and stuffed animals intrigued me but it would often sit off to the side unable to fit into any narrative I liked the animal puppets but was afraid of the breasts It was unlike any of the other covers It was very weird what was this practically topless woman doing on a record with such abstract music and what were those puppets doing on her breasts Playboys was recorded in 1956 nearly 50 years before Britney Spears rubbed our consumer eyes in her Lolita fantasy But its a woman on the cover of Chet Baker and Art Peppers record and women are pure jazz Or maybe young naughty girls were just older then I would be shocked today if I saw a young girl being sexually provocative on the cover of a contemporary jazz record whether it was the artist herself or borrowed sexuality I think the woman on the cover is more mysterious than any cleavaged cover or actual diva star icon on a Rolling Stone cover The blackness surrounding her the reddish cast to her body gives her a smouldering 3D quality Had I bothered to read the first song title on the record I might have had a clue for my narrative For Minors Only As an eight year old I had better things to do
