Even though the Flying Burrito Brothers' Guilded palace of sin is Gram Parsons' finest achievement, this album is a worthy second. First of all it's Gram Parsons' songs. "Return of the grievous angel" is a wonderful opener with one of his most beautiful melodies. "Brass buttons" and "$1000 wedding" features Parsons doing country ballads at his very best. "Ooh Las Vegas" is a great rocker and remains one of his most popular songs. The beautiful "In my hour of darkness" is a fitting end to his great career, although at the time he recorded it he didn't know it would be the closing track of his last ever album.
