Kicked along here by organist Larry Young, the booting tenor sax of Harold Vick and the insisent conga of Candido Camero, Green has never sounded better, or funkier -presented in stickered & sealed picture sleeve Tracks: 01. The Selma March 02. Willow Weep For Me 03. The Cantaloupe Woman 04. That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day) 05. Daddy Grapes Although he was a severely underrated player during his lifetime, in recent years Grant Green has emerged as one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar. His playing, especially on his vanguard Blue Note LPs of the 1960s, is immediately recognizable—perhaps more than that of any other postwar jazz guitarist. The possessor of a cool, skeletal, translucent technique, Green eschewed traditional chordal playing in favor of a style that relies more on linear, single-note phrasing. And though few guitarists could handle standards and ballads with the brilliance of Green, he was slouch when it came to funk, either, as his 1967 Verve set, His Majesty King Funk, amply displays.
