Release date: 05-11-2006 (reissue from 1974) 2004 UK 14-track vinyl LP-This outstanding hits collection spotlights Philadelphia soul before MFSB swept the 70s sound up in discophonic orchestration. With arrangements by Bobby Martin and Thom Bell, acting on a jazzy bass/drums/vibes interplay, producers (and future Philly International label heads) Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff surrounded the Intruders' sweet soul harmonies (led by distinctive lead singer Sonny Brown) with clever, soulful effects.-Sealed in colour sleeve. Tracks: 01. Cowboys to Girls 02. Together 03. (We'll Be) United 04. (Love Is Like A) Baseball Game 05. Slow Drag 06. When We Get Married - The Intruders, Hogan, Donald 07. Sad Girl - The Intruders, Smith, Lloyd 08. A Love That's Real 09. Friends No More 10. Gonna Be Strong 11. Me Tarzan, You Jane - The Intruders, Farrow, M. 12. Check Yourself You hear the ceremonial horns start "Together," the xylophone/guitar rev-ups in "Slow Drag" (one of the prettiest soul songs written about dancing), and a sweeping bell effect on their version of Jay Wiggins' "Sad Girl" that sounds almost classical. Also included is 1968's Top 10 hit "Cowboys to Girls," a remake of their doo-wop hit "When We Get Married," and the Motownish "Check Yourself." To these ears, however, the favorite is "Love Is Like A Baseball Game," with its line "I could never win when I played a baseball game/I guess love and baseball are just about the same." That's a Philly soul AND a Philly baseball fan singing! Recommended, but also check out their "Save The Children" album from 1973 (featuring "I'll Always Love My Mama") and the larger "Cowboys To Girls" retrospective. - by Anthony G pizza "trivialtony" Songs recorded during a time when men were men and women were women. We danced together, we talk, we make love, we dreamed of the future. Great sounds. -Songs recorded during a time when men were men and women were women.
