He released a series of albums in the late-60s and early-70s on Impulse that just rocked. Chicken Fat was probably his first real mix of the Blues and Funk. Bob Thiele did production and Brown was actually backed up by Jazz session men like Herb Ellis and Paul Humphrey. The title track and Greasy Spoon are grooving instrumentals driven by Brown’s guitar playing. Anacrusis is a catchy 60s Pop-Jazz tune penned by Oliver Nelson for the album. Hobo Flats is another Oliver Nelson composition, best known for being played by Jimmy Smith. Brown gives it a funky twist with his guitar playing, while keeping its bluesy feel. Shanty is a similar number that starts with a drum break, and Slalom provides a nice ending to everything.
