This album spotlights Julian Koster's songcraft and distinctive vocals, his almost religious devotion to the singing saw and numerous contributions from other musicians in the Elephant 6 orbit. As on previous efforts, recording was done using an array of antique hardware, giving the record a timeless, texturally rich sonic palette.

Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes is an album to be released by The Music Tapes, a project consisting mainly of Neutral Milk Hotel's Julian Koster in 2008 by Merge Records. Koster spent nine years recording the album using mainly antique hardware and such as a 1895 Edison wax cylinder recorder, a 1940's wire recorder, a "state of the art hard drive", and reel to reel tape recorders.
