Smack in between hardcore punk and alternative, it was impossible to deconstruct the Pixies' ferocious howl. Brick Is Red Surfer Rosa is essentially the first release by a band that majorly helped define what we now refer to as 'indie' music. A lot of what the Pixies did for music and their influence on thousands of future bands is evident right here in this very album. Here, they brought forward a lot of ideas for independent and alternative music to come. These guys were the ultimate punks. They essentially did whatever they wanted, musically and creatively. Sure, bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth were already doing this kind of thing, but it was the Pixies that basically took that 'non-mainstream' sound and made it more accessible but also, more creative. All the songs here are essentially 2 or 3-minute snippets of a sound that became extremely popular in the underground music scene, and helped shape alternative music as we know it today.
