Silly classifications aside, they have not changed so much as their audience has. Perhaps they are part to blame for 'us' growing to love them for what they say, as well as how they sound. I have had the Rapid Eye Movement albums in constant spin for the past week or so... I have never enjoyed them so much, from first to last, each album is in its own way is a wonder for the senses. If you don't get it (or them) you are missing out on one of the real treats in life. The aural delight of a band that does not 'beat' the instruments into senseless noise, nor Mr. Stripe's voice, is to be savored. There are wondrous layers and textures in R.E.M.'s music, boxes inside of boxes inside of boxes if you will. The more you listen, the more you hear... They have stood the test of time, their music has weathered well. They survived success and remained real people. I have enjoyed my first spin of this new work and find it to be worthy of those whom created it. Fault is not hard to find, nor does finding same make one an 'expert?' Dear, me if you found a lyric or sound level to be a tad 'off' in a live album, get a life. Listen to the music, enjoy the unprovoked tingle of the body and smile it brings to ones face. There is just not enough of R.E.M. to go around. Grab all you can and hold on to it. They are the best band in America. Period. -by R.J. Sorensen
