the second album from White Stripes
2001 UK 13-track vinyl LP, self-produced by Jack White and recorded at Third Man Studios, picture sleeve plus picture/lyric inner bag. Features a tunefulness only hinted at on their debut. "You're Pretty Good Looking" and "Apple Blossom" might as well have been written by the Kinks' Ray Davies. The true stars of this album are the guitar solos, especially on "Little Bird" and the Son House cover "Death Letter." No one has played with this kind of choppy, raw brilliance for years.
Tracks: 01. You're Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl) 02. Hello Operator 03. Little Bird 04. Apple Blossom 05. I'm Bound To Pack It Up 06. Death Letter 07. Sister, Do You Know My Name? 08. Truth Doesn't Make A Noise 09. A Boy's Best Friend 10. Let's Build A Home 11. Jumble, Jumble 12. Why Can't You Be Nicer To Me? 13. Your Southern Can Is Mine
If the Who played "maximum R&B," then you could call the White Stripes' music "minimum R&B": blues-tinged rock & roll scaled back to its most essential elements -- one guitar, a simple drum kit and sneering vocals. The second album by the Detroit couple, De Stijl, is feisty and clever, full of scuzzy garage rock that would fit nicely on a Nuggets compilation between the Sonics and the Standells. Guitarist Jack White's clipped strumming on "Jumble, Jumble" evokes the Sonics' classic "The Witch," while the vaudeville-style "Apple Blossom" echoes Village Green Preservation Society-era Kinks. The Stripes' quirks are more delightfully apparent live, but on songs like "Hello Operator,"
you can hear how White's knack for phrasing -- both his vocals and guitar lines -- gives the songs the feel of improvisation. And Meg White's drumming is so minimal that it's almost funny: It forces a smile because, like everything about the White Stripes, it proves that you don't need bombast to make a blues explosion. -JENNY ELISCU
released in 2000. The album reached number thirty-eight on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart in 2002 when The White Stripes' popularity began establishing itself. It has since become a cult hit for White Stripes fans because it displays the early fusion of simplicity of the band's blues and punk fusion before the breakthrough success of White Blood Cells. De Stijl was dedicated to Rietveld as well as Blind Willie McTell.
"De Stijl" is a Dutch art movement and means "The Style". Lead singer Jack White had been an admirer of the movement for a long time, especially of furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld who also designed the Rietveld Schröder House, which Jack and Meg White visited while on tour in the Netherlands.
The White Stripes is an American alternative rock band from Detroit, Michigan. They were formed in 1997 by vocalist, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jack White and drummer Meg White, who have remained the consistent line-up.
After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit independent music underground, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002 as part of the "garage rock revival" scene. Their successful albums, White Blood Cells and Elephant, drew them attention from a large variety of media outlets in the United States and the United Kingdom.
The White Stripes use a low-fidelity, do-it-yourself approach to writing and recording, stressing a stripped-down, raw, minimalistic simplicity of composition and arrangement mostly inspired by early punk rock, blues, garage rock, folk and country music. The band uses a color scheme of red, white, and black colors and clothing. The White Stripes' latest three albums have each won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
