2014 reissue on 180g 45rpm 2LP=Melody's debut album `Worrisome Heart' introduced, in The Sunday Times' words: "a remarkable talent by any measure", with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that "ooze after-hours sophistication".
Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. `My One And Only Thrill' is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand.
These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track My One And Only Thrill. And when the album is finished (as Irving Berlin wrote truly) the song is over, but the Melody lingers on . . .
In a musical landscape ripe with great singers it is Melody's unique approach to songwriting that sets her apart. Although her songs often sound like jazz, they defy easy categorization... a touch of Peggy Lee's poetry, a hint of Norah Jones and Joni Mitchell. Melody's tunes already feel like classics, possessed of a timeless quality rare in today's music.

Philadelphia chanteuse Melody Gardot's 2008 debut album Worrisome Heart introduced songs of quiet, wistful poetry with sophisticated after-hours arrangements. It's acclaimed 2009 follow-up, My One And Only Thrill then marked a substantial leap forward for the prodigiously talented singer/songwriter. Produced by Larry Klein and with lush arrangements from Vince Mendoza, the album transcends genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to music-lovers across the board.
As with her acclaimed live shows she truly captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand here. These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except an irresistible Brazilian take on "Over The Rainbow" which is dedicated to the singer's grandmother. Includes the orchestral version of "If the Stars Were Mine" as a bonus track.
My One And Only Thrill earned three Grammy Award nominations including: Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the title track; Best Engineered Album Non-Classical; and Producer of the Year Non-Classical.
"In my eyes, there's two kinds of music," says Gardot. "There's the kind that rushes out at you, and the kind that settles in and lets you come to it. I prefer the latter of the two. I like the idea of hearing music in the distance; you're drawn to it and you want to know what it is. To me, that's beautiful, that's the essence of listening to music: discovering it, exploring it and finding those little spaces."
