2012 EU reissue ( 180g vinyl LP ) 1996's Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is the official debut full-length release from the Denver, CO alt-country group Sixteen Horsepower led by singer/multi-instrumentalist David Eugene Edwards. Boasting a unique 'Gothic Americana' sound built around antique instruments like banjo, accordion, lap steel and stand-up bass and featuring fire and brimstone themed songs, the Warren Bruleigh (Violent Femmes) produced Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is a powerful and chilling affair. Joining Edwards here are drummer Jean-Yves Tola, bassist Keven Soll and guest musician and fiddle player Gordon Gano on fourteen commanding tracks including one of the group's most heralded songs, "Black Soul Choir."
